Lend Your Heart, Lend Your Hand

BRENTWOOD, NEW YORK (JANUARY 2021)—A handful of South Middle School students and teachers in the Brentwood Union Free School District (BUFSD) provided a helping hand to local families through the building’s Caring and Sharing program. Ahead of the holiday season, the program collected non-perishable food and provided 12 appreciative Brentwood families with a holiday meal and food for the week of winter recess.

“The Caring and Sharing program highlights the commitment from our educators to foster and sustain a caring environment for our students and their families,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, Superintendent of Brentwood Union Free School District. “While it provides an opportunity for our students and staff to be engaged and caring citizens, it also teaches essential skills that can be used inside and outside of the classroom. Despite the many obstacles this year, I am so proud of every individual involved for their commitment to spread positivity in a time that it’s needed most and to ensure another successful year of this phenomenal program.”

What began in 1966 by former SMS teacher, Mr. Johnson, has since become an annual tradition and pillar of SMS. Mr. Johnson was joined by SMS’s Ms. Ingrid Citrin in 1998, and soon after by Mrs. Gallagher, Mr. Gagliardi, and Mr. Citrin. The four SMS educators have since expanded the initiative to benefit not only the families of SMS but throughout the district.
