Brentwood High School Launches Student-Led Podcast Series

BRENTWOOD, NEW YORK (MARCH 2021)—A group of Brentwood High School students have turned to audio storytelling to produce a student-led podcast series, Classroom to Careers, amid remote learning and hybrid schedules. The podcast—which coincides with the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs’ Classrooms to Careers initiative—aims to introduce high school students to local industry employers and showcase work opportunities post-graduation.

“On behalf of the Board of Education and Central Office, we are incredibly proud of our students for their ingenuity in reporting for the series and dedication in producing the podcast overall,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, Superintendent of Brentwood Union Free School District. “This series serves as a wonderful opportunity for our research students to use their voices to inform other Brentwood students, and several other listeners, of potential career opportunities, which in turn, opens several new doors. This would not be possible without our fantastic partners at the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Brentwood Public Library, as well as our staff in our Career Education office.”

With BHS research students Juan Delgado and Joshua Castellanos as the two voices behind the scenes, episode one features Suffolk County Labor Commissioner Rosaie Drago who discusses the nuances of her life, important insight she’s acquired over the years and the possibility of an autobiography. During episode 2, Juan and Josh interview the Smithtown High School InvenTeam, recipients of the nationally recognized Lemelson-MIT Program Awards, about their aspirations to positively impact the world. The 35-minute episode, Suffolk County Labor Commissioner Rosalie Drago, and 60-minute episode, Smithtown High School InveTeam, can both be accessed on Anchor by Spotify.

The district’s “Let’s Science That!” program, initiated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, served as a catalyst for the podcast series. The program, spearheaded by BHS science research teacher, Dr. Rebcca Grella, showcases student STEM research and the work of regional, national and international scientists.
