Brentwood High School Student Wins $5,000 Scholarship from Girls Inc.

Eleventh-grader Maritza Prescod recently received a $5,000 Girls Inc. of Long Island Scholarship and was honored this fall at The Heritage Club at Bethpage during the organization’s 20th Anniversary Gala. She was one of three Long Island students selected for her commitment to the Girls Inc. mission and for her growth, resilience, confidence and dedication to giving back. The scholarship helps outstanding participants in 11th and 12th grades across Nassau and Suffolk counties cover costs such as application fees, tuition, preparatory courses and transportation.

Girls Inc. of Long Island is the Long Island affiliate of Girls Incorporated, a national girls’ leadership organization that inspires girls to be strong, smart and bold. The organization works with schools across Nassau and Suffolk, including Brentwood, offering after-school programs that connect classroom learning with real-world skills. It serves girls from fifth through 12th grade in about 24 school partnerships, helping participants talk about networking, college readiness, healthy relationships, mental health and career exploration.

Girls Inc. of Long Island also earned national recognition as a Bank of America 2023 Neighborhood Builders awardee, securing multi-year funding and leadership training to expand its programs and strengthen economic mobility and equity initiatives on Long Island.

The scholarship awarded to Prescod reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to equip young women with the confidence and resources they need to succeed in school, community and life.
