8136-R Metal Detectors
The following procedures shall govern the operation and oversight of metal detectors in the Brentwood Union Free School District (the “District”).
Deployment
- The Superintendent or designee will determine when and where metal detectors will be used.
- Deployment may include daily use at entrances, random screenings, or event-specific screenings.
Operation Procedures
- Individuals must pass through the walk-through metal detector or submit to a hand-held scan when such devices are in use.
- Security staff shall instruct individuals to remove metallic items before passing through.
- If the detector is activated, a secondary screening shall occur, including the use of a hand-held wand and/or inspection of bags and personal items.
- Any contraband or weapon discovered shall be secured, and law enforcement shall be notified immediately.
Student Procedures
- If a student activates the detector and a search is necessary, the building principal or designee must be present.
- Searches shall comply with Policy 5300, Student Code of Conduct
- Parents/guardians shall be notified when a student is found in possession of a prohibited item.
Documentation
- Each screening activation and follow-up action shall be documented on a district-approved incident report form.
- Records shall be maintained in the building-level safety office and reviewed by the Superintendent’s office.
Training
- Staff authorized to operate metal detectors must receive initial and annual training in:
- Proper use of equipment
- Student rights and privacy
- De-escalation strategies
- Emergency response protocols
Review and Oversight
- The Superintendent or designee shall review all metal detector reports and prepare an annual summary for the Board.
- The effectiveness, fairness, and safety of the procedures shall be evaluated annually, with revisions as needed.
