8124 Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

(This policy replaces previously approved Board of Education Policy #2602)

School districts are responsible for providing first aid or emergency care in the case of sudden illness or injury to a pupil, staff member or visitor. The aid given should be in accordance with prescribed procedures.

The Brentwood Board of Education recognizes the need to make Automated External Defibrillators (AED)s available in its school buildings as a part of the Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Program in accordance with the Public Access Defibrillation Law (Chapter 552 of the Laws of 1998).

The Board, in compliance with Public Health Law 3000-b, will purchase and maintain automated external defibrillators in the High School, Freshman Center and every middle and elementary school in the Brentwood School District. The primary goal is to provide a safe and healthy environment for the students, staff, parents and guests in our schools.

Ongoing training will be given to specific District staff members in order to comply with this statute which took affect September l, 2002.  Only staff members who have been trained and certified in Automated External Defibrillation and CPR may use the AED.

Annually, the Board shall appoint an emergency health care provider to provide medical oversight for the use of the PAD’s.  The Regional Emergency Services Council and the State Department of Health, as well as the local emergency services providers, shall be notified of the locations and use of PADs within the Brentwood Union Free School District.

Regulations and protocols governing the use of the PADs within the Brentwood Union Free School District shall be approved by the Board.  These regulations and protocols shall be incorporated into the Brentwood School District’s Emergency Management Plan.
