8110 School Building Safety
The Board of Education recognizes that a safe, secure and healthy school environment is necessary to promote effective learning. The Board is committed to ensuring that all school buildings are properly maintained and preserved to provide a suitable educational setting.
Consistent with the requirements of state law and regulations, the Board will:
- Appoint a School Safety Team to each school building composed of representatives from district administration, school safety personnel, school staff, bargaining units, and parents who shall participate in monitoring the condition of occupied school buildings to assure that they are safe and maintained in a state of good repair. Additional monitoring by school safety personnel shall include daily inspections to identify any potential hazards in kitchens, boiler rooms, and grounds, as well as any obstructions that may disrupt the school day or pose a safety risk. This monitoring includes ensuring the functionality of water fountains and dispensers in school buildings. A semiannual risk assessment will be conducted by school safety personnel with findings reported to the Superintendent of Schools and the Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations in December, and June, of each school year.
- The School Safety Team and/or school safety personnel will take immediate action to remedy serious conditions in school buildings affecting health and safety and report such conditions to the Superintendent of Schools on an ongoing basis.
The Superintendent of Schools shall be responsible for the development of procedures for investigating and resolving complaints related to the health and safety issues in the district’s buildings consistent with requirements of state law and regulations.
