5600 Student Liason to the Board of Education
- 5000: Student Policies
(This policy replaces previously approved Board of Education Policy #5139)
The Board of Education recognizes that the viewpoints and opinions of the students within the Brentwood Union Free School District can be beneficial in assisting the Board in making policy and procedural decisions that affect the District. This “voice” is also beneficial in helping the Board of Education understand current, daily educational experiences from the student’s point-of-view. The goal of this initiative is to work cooperatively to make the school and District a better place.
To achieve this end, a student liaison, and an alternative, shall be selected in June of each year by the newly elected officers of the Brentwood High School Student Council. The term of office for the student liaison shall be one (1) year, from July 1st through June 30th.
The responsibilities of the student liaison shall be:
- Attend every Board of Education meeting.
- Report Student Council issues to the Board of Education during Public Session.
- Report information from the Board of Education meeting to the High School Student Council.
- Meet regularly with the High School Principal to discuss any issue before reporting it to the Board of Education.
- Additional questions and concerns by the Board of Education regarding high school student issues should be channeled through the student liaison to the High School Principal. This will allow the student to research the issue and develop an informed response to present to the Board the following month.
In summary, the student liaison shall gather information on student matters and meet with the High School Principal on a regular basis to prepare an informal report on any issues. This report shall be presented to the Board of Education at their monthly meeting(s). Time will be allotted during the Public Session of the Board of Education’s meeting agenda for this report.
The student selected to perform this role shall serve as a communicative liaison between the students of Brentwood High School and the Board of Education. The attached form should be completed and signed by both the student and his/her parent/guardian. A copy should be sent to the Board of Education, with a second copy on file in the High School Principal’s Office.
The student liaison is NOT an ex-officio member of the Brentwood Board of Education, which would require a separate voter referendum.
