Overview
The Brentwood Union Free School District Board of Education recognizes the value of a student representative serving on the Board. The Board promotes the unique perspective offered by a student and believes that the student’s contributions will enhance the decisions made by the collective members while fostering an opportunity for the elected student to build skills and habits of civic engagement. Upon appointment, the ex officio student board member(s) will be entitled to sit with members of the Board at all public meetings of the Board, participate in all Board public hearings and meetings, and may participate in training opportunities at the discretion of the Board.
The ex officio student member(s) will NOT: be allowed to vote; be allowed to attend executive sessions; or be entitled to receive compensation of any form for participating at Board meetings. Neither will the ex officio student member(s) have the authority to call a special and/or emergency meeting of the Board; be considered a “member(s)” of the Board of Education for the purpose of establishing a quorum for conducting business or making statements on behalf of the Board; or be allowed to see or discuss documents or information regarding individual district personnel, collective bargaining negotiations, individual student records, or any other confidential matters.
Eligibility
Students eligible for ex officio student representative membership shall be a current member of the sophomore, junior, or senior class and shall have attended the high school for at least one year prior to appointment. Generally, the appointment process shall take place at the end of the school year preceding the next term. All qualified students interested in being an ex officio student member should contact the High School Principal and complete an application.
If an appointed ex officio student member resigns the position, is removed, or is no longer able to serve, a new ex officio student member will be appointed in accordance with this policy; OR by the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee, unless the Board determines there is not enough time to make the appointment before the school year ends.
Appointment Process
The Board will appoint as ex officio student member(s) recommended by the High School Principal and approved by the Superintendent of Schools.
Prior to the High School Principal or Superintendent of Schools or Board of Education selecting an ex officio student member the following process should be utilized:
- a written application stating interest
- an interview by the High School Principal or Superintendent of Schools/Designee of the Superintendent of Schools or Board of Education
- submit at least one recommendation
Term
The ex officio student member(s) will serve for a term of one (1) year, commencing on July 1 and ending on the succeeding June 30. Attendance at Board meetings will not be expected for the ex officio student member(s) during July and August.
