At its annual organization meeting, the Board of Education is required by New York State Education Law 1701 to elect one of its members as President and at its discretion, elect one of its members as the 1st Vice President, and if further inclined, elect one of its members as the 2nd Vice President.
At this meeting, the current District Clerk of the Board shall serve as the chairperson in the election of the President. All members of the Board of Education are eligible for election as President. Members are nominated by fellow trustees and elected by the majority vote of the Board.
Upon being sworn into office, the newly appointed President shall accept nominations for the 1st Vice President and, if the Board so chooses a 2nd Vice President. All of the remaining Board members are eligible for election to these offices. The 1st Vice President and 2nd Vice President are elected by the majority vote of the Board and sworn into office.
The term for these positions, the President, the 1st Vice President and 2nd Vice President, shall be for one (1) year.
Requirements of the Board of Education Officers
The President and Vice Presidents of the Board of Education must be members of the Board and shall be elected by the members of the Board at the annual organization meeting in July.
In case of a vacancy due to the death, resignation or removal of the Board of Education President, lst Vice President shall call the Board to order for the purpose of choosing a temporary chairperson for the election of a Board President.
Duties of the President of the Board
The duties of the President of the Board shall be as follows:
- To preside at all meetings;
- To call special meetings they consider necessary or on request of one member of the Board;
- To appoint all standing and ad hoc committees and members therein, with the advice of fellow Board members;
- To act as an ex-officio member of all committees;
- To execute all documents on behalf of the Board;
- To act as chief fiscal officer for the District;
- To act as Chair of the Board Executive Committee, if one exists; and
- To perform the usual and ordinary duties of the office.
Duties of the 1st Vice President
Within statutory limitations, the 1st Vice President shall be authorized to assume all the duties of the President in their absence or inability to act and shall also serve on the Executive Committee of the Board, if one exists.
Duties of the 2nd Vice President
Within statutory limitations, the 2nd Vice President shall be authorized to assume all the duties of the President when both the President and 1st Vice President are absent or unable to act.
