1420 Complaints About Instructional Practice

(This policy replaces previously approved Board of Education Policy #1312)

Procedures have been established for citizens to follow when requesting a review of an educational practice affecting either their child or the school district so that a prompt response to this request can be forthcoming (See 1420-R). Opportunities will be provided for all involved to participate in discussion and be part of the ultimate solution to the request.

The announcement of this policy and a statement regarding it will be included in the Parent Compact in each of our District’s schools.

COMPLAINTS ABOUT INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICE REGULATION

The citizens of the School Community may register their criticism with the School Authorities by following these procedures:

  1. Informal Level

    1. Most questions and problems can be resolved in an informal contact between the parent and the teacher or Principal:

      1. In all instances the first contact concerning an instructional practice should be taken up with the teacher if it involves a practice in a classroom with the parent’s own child.
      2. If the practice should be based upon school policy rather than based upon options available to the teacher, then the first contact should be with the Building Principal.

    2. If this issue is not resolved upon the completion of the dialogue between the parent and the teacher, the next contact will be with the Principal. In most instances, there will be a point of resolution on an informal basis.

  2. Formal Level

    1.  If the complaint is not resolved on an informal basis is not, the parent will request the Principal to transfer this matter to the attention of the appropriate Assistant Superintendent. Secondary school matters will be referred to the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education and elementary school issues will be referred to the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education.
    2.  If the parent is not satisfied with the decision, the parent will request the Assistant Superintendent to present this matter to the Superintendent of Schools
    3.  If the parent is not satisfied with the decision of the Superintendent, the parent may appeal in writing to the Board of Education.
