In addition graduations and moving up ceremonies all the rage in the past month, Brentwood High School was a busy place for many other clubs and entities around the community! Here's a look at just some of the many events that took place during the month of June.
Brentwood High School Hosts MBK Empowerment Brunch - June 1
On the first day of the month, the Brentwood chapter of My Brother's Keeper (MBK) hosted its annual end-of-year Empowerment Brunch to celebrate the accomplishments of its members. The MBK program is designed to increase academic and social outcomes for its members through mentoring, leadership development and college awareness.
Members of the Brentwood UFSD Board of Education and Cabinet were on hand for the event along with New York State Senator Monica Martinez (D), who presented Brentwood Assistant Principal and MBK Coordinator Dr. Chief Taylor with a proclamation honoring him for his years of dedication and service to the program. Dr. Taylor was also presented with a proclamation from the office of Suffolk County Legislator Samuel Gonzalez (D-9th District) and New York State Assembly Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos (D-6th District).
Brentwood Troop 371 Celebrates Eagle Scout Recipients!
In ceremonies that took place within weeks of each other, Brentwood High School students Jayson Castro and Angel Rojas received their Eagle Scout designations from Boy Scout Troop 371. Castro's Eagle Scout project was the building of storage containers at North Middle School while Rojas created a new "Welcome to Brentwood" town sign to better beautify the community.
Brentwood Cosmetology Students Provide Beauty Services to Eighth Grade Students Prior to Formal!
Under the direction of Ms. Benjamin, Brentwood High School's cosmetology classes shuttled across the district to provide services to eighth grade students prior to their formal dances and proms. The program, which has received countless accolades across various competitions including the annual Fran Cook Hairstyling Competition, provided senior students with BOCES experience to help them begin to realize their dreams of working in a salon or owning their own studio post-graduation. The work done in the photos includes hairstyling done at both West and North Middle Schools, and the students also provided services at East Middle School.
AFJROTC Honors the Flag and Takes to the Skies!
On June 14, 20 cadets from Brentwood's AFJROTC NY773 Fighting Falcons took part in a Flag Day Retirement Ceremony at the American Legion Post #1006 in Brentwood. Ceremonies like this one honor renditions of the American flag that have been deemed to be henceforth unserviceable and provides a ceremony to retire the flags in a dignified manner. The cadets were joined by veterans of Brentwood for this ceremony.
In addition, cadets had the opportunity to join the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) on June 18 at Islip MacArthur Airport. The cadets accompanied the CAP through four practice "sorties," or combat missions on the day. Finally, the cadets were on hand to support the Brentwood High School graduation on June 26 by means of presentation of the colors and providing escorts for the day. AFJROTC graduate Susana Landaverde provided an awe-inspiring vocal rendition of
"The Star-Spangled Banner."
Drama Club Performs at June Board of Education Business Meeting to Close Out School Year
At the Brentwood Board of Education Business Meeting on June 20, members of the BHS Drama Club were honored and recognized for their fantastic performance of "On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan" from back in February. The students performed a medley of songs for the crowd in the Anthony F. Felicio Administration Building's Public Meeting Room as well as those watching the meeting through the BUFSD YouTube channel. In addition, Drama Club Director and Choreographer Ms. Rachel Ferzola was presented with a Certificate of Recognition for achievements in theater with other certificates commissioned for the rest of the production department, including Vocal Directors Mr. Bley and Mr. Tims; Music Director Ms. Hillard; and Stage Crew Director Ms. Gustafson and Mr. Jackson.
