Young Author and Advocate Inspires Oak Park Students to Be ‘Upstanders’

Students at Oak Park Elementary School received a powerful lesson in kindness and courage Monday, Oct. 20, when youth advocate and author Devin Moore visited to share his anti-bullying message and donate copies of his book, “Devin Speaks Up,” to the school library.

Moore, founder of the organization Race to Speak Up, read to several classes and spoke about the importance of being an “upstander” – someone who stands up against bullying and supports others in need. His presentation encouraged students to use their voices to promote empathy, inclusion and respect.

This visit marked Moore’s second time giving back to Brentwood schools. Over the summer, he donated 450 copies of his book to district libraries to help empower students to recognize their own potential and make a difference in their communities.

District leaders say Moore’s message aligns closely with the goals of Brentwood’s Graduation PLUS+ initiative, which focuses on helping students feel seen and heard while identifying what inspires and motivates them. The initiative encourages every child to find their niche, build confidence and prepare for life beyond the classroom.
