Transforming K-5 Mathematics: A Year of Exploration and Growth

This year, K-5 mathematics classrooms are buzzing with excitement as students uncover the joy of math beyond just numbers and equations. With the implementation of the Next Generation Mathematics standards, the focus is on creating an environment where students take the lead in their learning journey. This initiative promotes hands-on experiences, engaging games, and critical thinking opportunities, all designed to make math not only fun but also meaningful.

The collaborative efforts of Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education, Mrs. Ann Palmer, and Mr. William Atwood, who is leading professional development for dedicated math teachers, have been instrumental in this shift. Mr. Atwood’s program emphasizes five key strategies aimed at enhancing mathematical fluency and fostering vibrant classroom discussions. These strategies empower students to share ideas, challenge one another, and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

The initiative kicked off at Hemlock Park, where Mr. Atwood launched his first session. His work with teachers at Loretta Park was equally inspiring, generating an infectious energy that educators are eager to bring back to their classrooms.

As this journey unfolds, there is a commitment to helping students not only solve problems but also reason mathematically and articulate their thinking—skills that will serve them for years to come.
