Speech Fest Celebrates Communication and Community in Brentwood

Brentwood’s annual Speech Fest, held May 1 in recognition of National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, brought together students, families and staff for a celebration of communication, culture and inclusion.

Centered on the theme “Our Voices Are Our Soundtrack,” the event featured interactive activities and educational stations highlighting musicians who have overcome obstacles or live with speech and language challenges. Organizers said the exhibits encouraged participants to reflect on how communication and self-expression can serve as powerful tools for connection.

The event also reflected the district’s GraduationPLUS+ initiative, which emphasizes building communication skills, confidence and real-world readiness. Families engaged in hands-on experiences while learning about resources that support student growth beyond the classroom.

Community partnerships played a key role in the event’s success. Local businesses, including Amore Pizza, Campbell’s Bakery, Lakewood Bakery, McDonald’s and Texas Roadhouse, donated food for attendees. Bellport Village Dentistry provided free toothbrushes for students.

Several organizations hosted informational tables and activities, including the Brentwood Public Library, EAC Network and The Rinx. The Brentwood Fire Department added to the experience with a fire truck visit, offering students an up-close look at emergency equipment.

Students from Molloy University conducted free hearing screenings through a mobile clinic, while volunteers from a BOCES high school cosmetology program assisted with event activities. Laurel Park staff member Mr. Ceballos served as master of ceremonies.

East Middle School hosted the event, with staff supporting setup and coordination. Decorations, including a balloon arch donated by Anita Krumholz, added to the festive atmosphere.

The district extends its gratitude to the speech and hearing department and SEPTA for coordinating fundraising efforts, which raised a record amount to support two scholarships for graduating seniors.
