High School Runner Earns News 12 Scholar-Athlete Award

Senior Gabriella Asare was named the News 12 Scholar-Athlete award winner on April 16, earning a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by FourLeaf Federal Credit Union in recognition of her achievements in both academics and athletics.
News 12 reporter Kevin Mahar and a camera crew visited to interview Asare and present the award, highlighting her success on the track and in the classroom. The honor recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence across disciplines.
Asare has established herself as one of the top track and field competitors in New York State. She posted a time of 14.5 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, ranking eighth in the state among returning athletes and placing 13th overall as a junior. She also ranks fourth on Long Island in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.82 and placed sixth in the state in the winter season in the 55-meter hurdles.
Continuing her strong senior campaign, Asare is currently ranked No. 3 in the state and recently secured a first-place finish at the Knight Invitational. Her consistent performances have positioned her among the elite competitors in New York.
Asare’s recognition reflects a balance of achievement in sports and academics, underscoring her role as a leader both on and off the track.
