High School Adult ESL Program Celebrates Lifelong Learners

Adult English as a Second Language students were recognized with certificates of accomplishment last week, marking the completion of another year of learning and personal achievement through the district’s longstanding adult education program.

The program has provided ESL instruction to residents of Brentwood and neighboring communities for more than 25 years, serving students from Central Islip, Islip, Patchogue, Medford and surrounding areas. Classes are offered at four locations: Brentwood High School, Pronto of Long Island, The Learning Connection at the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Brentwood Public Library.

Enrollment reached 927 students during the 2025-26 school year, including 566 who attended evening classes at Brentwood High School. Students in the program range in age from 21 to 70.

Most participants come from South and Central America, but program leaders have also seen an increase in recent years in students from Haiti, many of whom speak Spanish, French and Creole.

The certificate recipients were recognized for their dedication to learning and their commitment to expanding educational and personal opportunities through English language instruction.
