Elementary Schools Journey to 1857: Field Trips to Schoolhouse Begin

Students from Southwest Elementary School in Brentwood went back in time as they were the first to visit the district’s historic schoolhouse following a lengthy restoration during a field trip April 14. The octagonal schoolhouse was built in 1857 by Brentwood residents seeking to create an ideal society called “Modern Times.” The utopian settlement spanned 90 acres and was founded on individual liberty, without a criminal justice system or taxes. By the end of the school year, every fourth grade class in Brentwood will have taken a journey through local history – in their own backyard – some 160 years later.
