Brentwood Students ‘Move On’ to Middle School with Fun, Hands-On Program

For incoming sixth graders, the transition to middle school can be both exciting and a little daunting. Brentwood’s “Moving on to Middle School” program helps students navigate this change with confidence, offering a mix of hands-on activities, social-emotional learning, and practical skills.

“I don’t think there is anything comparable to what we do here in Brentwood to support our students as they get ready for middle school,” said Kathleen Hudzik, assistant principal of South Middle School and one of the program’s leaders. “We love this program and love giving students the opportunity to get a glimpse of what lies ahead. The program helps to ease the students’ minds so they have a successful and smooth transition to middle school and I’m so happy to be a part of their journey.”

Now in its third summer, the program welcomed students for workshops on yoga, healthy relationships, digital safety, and personal hygiene. Students practiced reading schedules, opening lockers, and moving independently from class to class, all while building the skills and connections that will help them thrive in middle school.

This year, participants also got a taste of baton twirling, a dynamic sport combining dance and color guard routines, seen in competitions including the USA Junior Olympics. Students rounded out the experience by creating vision boards reflecting their learning and goals.

The district thanks to Ms. Hudzik, Dr. Eric Snell, Kristen Hittel and Kenya Nunez, as well as all the other teachers and staff who made this year so memorable.
