Brentwood Student Musicians Earn Honors At State Band Directors Symposium

Four student musicians represented their school community at the New York State Band Directors Association’s 45th Annual Symposium, held recently in Syracuse.

Adrian Cepeda (percussion), Brenda Morales (bass clarinet) and Joshua Ruiz (alto saxophone) were selected for the High School Honor Band, while Joellie Pena (trombone) was chosen for the High School Honor Jazz Ensemble. Students were selected based on a combination of application materials, audition results and New York State School Music Association scores.
The multi-day event brought together top high school musicians from across the state for intensive rehearsals and professional development. Rehearsals began upon arrival and continued throughout the weekend, culminating in a concert performance.

In addition to ensemble work, students participated in leadership workshops and collaborated with contemporary composers. A highlight of the experience was the opportunity to perform the world premiere of a new composition by Randall Standridge and to work directly with the composer during the rehearsal process.

According to music teacher Christina Helbock, the students demonstrated strong preparation and contributed positively to their ensembles. The experience also provided opportunities for students to connect with peers from other schools and further develop their skills in a high-level musical setting.
