Brentwood Senior Named Gates Scholar, Joins Elite Class of 2026

Rafael Estrada, a senior at Sonderling Center at Brentwood High School, has been selected as a recipient of The Gates Scholarship, one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships in the nation.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Rafael’s parents for their love and support, which have been foundational to his success,” said Superintendent Wanda Ortiz-Rivera. “Thank you as well to his guidance counselor, Michelle Popal, and to our entire district guidance department for their steadfast commitment to our students. This kind of achievement is never accomplished alone. It reflects a community working together to lift one another.”

Estrada was chosen from a pool of approximately 61,000 applicants nationwide, placing him among just 750 students selected for the honor this year. The scholarship recognizes exceptional student leaders and supports them in reaching their full academic and professional potential. Only about 1% of applicants receive the award annually.

Estrada has committed to attend Villanova University, where he plans to major in finance. His academic journey began in the Brentwood school district at Pine Park and Twin Pines Elementary schools, followed by North Middle School and the Freshman Center.

The Gates Scholarship aims to remove financial barriers for high-achieving students from underrepresented backgrounds, allowing recipients to pursue higher education with comprehensive support.

“Rafael is one of the most articulate, kind, trustworthy, brilliant, reliable, and hardworking students I've ever had the pleasure to work with,” said Michelle Popal, his counselor. “His potential is truly limitless. I cannot wait to see what he'll do next as he transitions to college and beyond.”
