Brentwood Schools Unveil Renovated Memorial on 24th Anniversary of 9/11

Brentwood High School students, staff and community members gathered Thursday morning at the district’s newly renovated 9/11 memorial, where two steel beams from the World Trade Center stand as a solemn reminder of the day that changed the nation.

“The two steel beams in this memorial were brought to Brentwood High School on Sept. 18, 2002,” said Chelsea Guevara, a member of the school’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. “These, and many other steel artifacts, now grace 9/11 memorials in cities, towns, firehouses and museums around the United States, and the world, to ensure that we will never forget.”

The memorial courtyard now features curved brick-lined walkways, manicured turf and fresh landscaping. The beams rise from the center of a circular brick foundation, anchoring the space as both a symbol of resilience and a place of reflection.

Before guests entered the space, members of the Brentwood Board of Education gathered to cut a ceremonial ribbon. As the ribbon fell, the crowd stepped forward, taking in the newly unveiled courtyard with awe and reverence.

Under clear skies, AFJROTC cadets led the presentation of colors as the American flag waved overhead. The ceremony drew local elected officials, building leaders, veterans and families. From second-floor windows, students looked on, captivated by the sight of their classmates marching in step and the flag unfurling above the memorial.

Superintendent Wanda Ortiz-Rivera spoke about the importance of remembrance and the lessons of unity that emerged from tragedy.

“This memorial, created for our school community, stands not only as a place to remember the innocent lives lost, but also as a symbol of resilience and strength,” Ortiz-Rivera said. “It is a space for our students today and for future generations of Brentwood students to reflect, to honor and to draw inspiration for the values that emerge in the darkest of times. I especially want to recognize our Brentwood Board of Education, whose vision and commitment made this renovation possible.”

As the ceremony closed, community members lingered by the memorial, tracing the brick patterns and pausing at the beams. For many, it was not only a moment to remember those lost, but also to reaffirm the strength of Brentwood’s spirit.
