Brentwood High School Artists Recognized During AAPI Heritage Month

As Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month comes to a close, Brentwood High School is celebrating the achievements of student artists whose work was recognized both inside and outside the classroom.

Junior Areba Ehsan’s artwork, featuring a single pink rose inspired by the flower’s origins in Central Asia, was selected for the AAPI Exhibition curated by artist Joan Kim Suzuki and the United Asian American Alliance. The exhibition, which highlights the work of Asian American and Pacific Islander artists, is on display this month at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington.

Senior Natalie Montoya recently completed a new mural in the Brentwood High School art wing depicting the Foo Dog, a Chinese Guardian Lion symbolizing protection and prosperity.

Students also explored the global influence of Asian American and Pacific Islander culture through art and pop culture studies. In Ms. Shim’s illustration class, students are creating stylized portraits inspired by K-pop, J-pop and anime as part of an AAPI-themed project examining artistic styles and cultural movements that continue to influence young artists worldwide.

From classroom projects to permanent displays in the hallways, AAPI Heritage Month at Brentwood High School highlighted creativity, cultural expression and understanding. Art teachers Mr. Schultz and Ms. Shim were recognized for supporting students whose talents have earned recognition beyond the classroom.
