Who's was Gary Mintz?

Gary Mintz was the Principal of Brentwood High School from 1989 until his sudden death in 1995. Together with other administrators at Brentwood HS, he had developed the idea of having a community 5k race on the morning of the scholarship pancake breakfast in December. The first attempt had only 28 runners participate. In 1995 the race was renamed in Gary's honor.

Brentwood Community Unites for 30th Annual Gary Mintz 5K Memorial Run

The Brentwood Union Free School District marked a milestone in tradition and community spirit with the 30th Annual Gary Mintz 5K Memorial Scholarship Run, bringing together students, staff, families and neighbors to honor a beloved former school leader.

The event, held in memory of Gary Mintz, late principal of Brentwood High School, drew a spirited crowd of runners and supporters who gathered to celebrate his enduring legacy. What began in the early 1990s as a modest fun run with just 28 participants has grown into a cherished annual tradition.

Mintz, who served as principal from 1989 until his sudden passing in 1995, originally helped launch the race alongside fellow high school administrators. The 5K was timed to coincide with the school’s scholarship pancake breakfast each December. Following his death, the event was renamed in his honor and has continued to grow and significance over the past three decades.

This year’s run was more than a race — it was a celebration of unity, perseverance and the deep-rooted values Mintz championed throughout his tenure. Organizers expressed gratitude to all who participated, as well as the crowd whose energy and encouragement fueled runners from start to finish.
