Brentwood Partners with Eastern Suffolk BOCES
to Improve Local Assessments
Teaching is the Core (TITC) Grant

The Brentwood Union Free School District is partnering with Eastern Suffolk BOCES on a new grant initiative entitled “Teaching is the Core.” The purpose of this initiative is to improve the quality of local assessments that are currently in use in our school district.

Over the past several months a team of Brentwood teachers and administrators has participated in a variety of training activities to improve their understanding of test construction and to make modifications to existing assessments in K-8 math classes. Thus far, the team has conducted formal reviews of five (5) quarterly assessments that are administered in the elementary grades. By the end of June, the team expects to review six (6) additional assessments in grades 3-8.

Through this work, the District hopes to align its math assessments more closely with the Common Core Standards and provide students with better feedback on their learning in mathematics.

For more information on the Teaching is the Core Grant, please contact the Office of Funded Programs at (631) 434-2403.
